Don't Look Back..

By: Kaelyn Gribble

Why do we cling to things of the past?

I’ve often asked myself this, especially during times of transition. In today’s world, we’re taught to chase comfort—holding tight to what feels safe and familiar. But this often causes us to look back, craving the security of what we once knew. When new doors open, they bring uncertainty and discomfort simply because they are unknown. So, we’re tempted to keep looking back, reaching for that sense of comfort. Yet, in doing so, we miss out on the beauty of what God is doing right here, right now.

The story of Lot’s wife comes to mind (Genesis 19:26). Genesis 19 unfolds during the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, cities known for their wickedness. God, in His mercy, sent two angels to rescue Lot and his family, urging them to flee without looking back. The angels warned, “Escape for your life; do not look behind you…lest you be consumed” (Genesis 19:17).

God was leading Lot’s family out of a place they knew—moving them into something new and better. But Lot’s wife looked back, unable to release the past, and she turned into a pillar of salt. That backward glance cost her the opportunity to experience God’s blessings in the present moment.

This act of looking back wasn’t just physical; it symbolized a heart still tied to the past and a disobedience to God’s command. Jesus later referenced her story in Luke 17:32 as a warning to stay focused on God’s salvation and not let the past hold us back.

Sometimes, the things we cling to—the comfort, the familiar, the material—aren’t even good for us. They might offer temporary satisfaction but ultimately distract us from God’s true purpose. When He closes a door, it’s often to protect us and lead us toward something far better than we can imagine, even when we can’t see it yet.

Recently, I went through an unexpected job loss—a position that felt perfect for my family and me. The door closed suddenly, with no warning or explanation. I had so many questions, and I still don’t have all the answers. But God’s Word reminds me to keep my faith strong and to trust His plans, even when the path is unclear (Proverbs 3:5-6).

So, I encourage you—and myself—not to look back.

Don’t rob yourself of the blessings that lie ahead by clinging to what was. Every chapter of our lives has a purpose, a season, a lesson. Give thanks for the moments God allowed, and trust that each closed door is a step closer to the purpose He has designed for you.

In times of transition and change, it's important to remember the wisdom found in Ecclesiastes 3:1, which says, "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven." Embracing both new beginnings and closed doors can strengthen our faith and deepen our relationship with God.

Let’s move forward in faith, not looking back, but pressing on with gratitude for the journey and hope for the future!

Prayer:

Father God, thank you for your grace and mercy. Thank you for the closed doors, thank you for keeping us in our familiar season, and thank you for the new seasons. God help us to embrace those closed doors, and please forgive us for not trusting you by looking back at what was. Father God, we trust that you know what is best for us. Help us to walk in gratefulness and embrace every season because you know best. In Jesus name, Amen.
