faith test: a time when what we know and what we believe will be revealed.
In life we will have moments when our faith will be put to the test. Think about it, in school, we are taught, examples are provided to help with application, and after practice, we must demonstrate on different type of tests. As we become adults, all that we learn as children is tested by how we respond in certain situations. At the end of driving school, we have to take a road test to make sure we are capable of operating a vehicle. Tests are inevitable. Tests are important.
I remember dreading them in school. In all honesty, sometimes I felt defeated before even walking in class to take a test (especially in math)...Where did this fear come from? Maybe it was because I knew I didn’t understand what I “studied”.
In the Bible, we are given examples of those who trusted God in times of adversity when their faith was tested. Their response gives us a glimpse into the true positions of their heart and what they really knew about God. Looking at Abraham’s story in Hebrews 11:17-19, we see that when God asked him to sacrifice his son, he took steps of obedience without question because he believed he would get him back.
"By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, of whom it was said, “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named." He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back." Hebrews 11:17-19
This story encourages me because it was not a simple request, yet we don’t read anything about Abraham trying to figure out why God would ask him to do such a thing. He instead trusted the God he knew in his heart and responded in obedience. In Genesis 22, the full story is told and we're able to see that even in this moment of testing, God used it to reveal a new facet of His character. Genesis 22:14, says: “So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.” The day his faith was tested, Abraham learned a new name of the Lord - Jehovah Jireh!
This should encourage us all to hold on to what we know to be true about God when our faith is tested ...On the other side, it very well may be a new facet of the Father’s grace waiting to be revealed.
