it's not over

As I wrestled with a title for this blog, trying to avoid the cliche phase of “it’s not over”, I couldn’t let it go. A few weeks ago, I was drawn back to the story of the Shunamite woman in 2 Kings 4. To summarize her story, she and her husband would always prepare meals for the prophet Elisha and his servant Gehazi. One day, she decided with her husband to make a permanent dwelling place on the roof of their home because he would always pass through their town. Due to her hospitality, Elisha wanted to know if he could do anything for her. Not needing a favor from a king or protection from an army, Elisha told her that in one year she would have a son since she had no children.

Elisha’s words came to pass. One year later she had a son just as he said. I can imagine her joy as she was blessed with what I am sure was her heart’s desire even though she couldn’t utter the words as Elisha asked her what she wanted. One day the boy was outside with his father harvesting grain when he hurt his head. His father quickly told his servant to take the boy to his mother. The boy laid on his mom’s lap where he died hours later. Notice what she did after her son died:

”So she took him up and laid him on Elisha’s bed. Then she shut the door and left.“

‭‭2 Kings‬ ‭4‬:‭21‬

This is the verse that stood out to me this time around. Notice that she laid him not on her bed, not the boy’s bed but on Elisha’s bed. She didn’t forget who had promised her that she would have a son. Luke 1:45 says “You are blessed because you believed that the Lord would do what he said”. She didn’t lose faith that a miracle could still happen. How do I know this? After she left the boy on Elisha’s bed, she went to find Elisha, essentially asking him to help her. Even though she was filled with grief, she still had hope. It wasn’t until the next day, but the boy lived!

Sometimes we find ourselves faced with what seemed like impossible situations. But if we hold on to God's WORD, we can see what He promised us will come to pass. My family and I just came out of what looked like a two-year financial drought. I wasn’t working, we had a baby, and the bills didn’t stop. I applied for more jobs than I can remember. God set us up for what was nothing short of a comeback! We should have lost our cars, home, and more but God didn’t let that happen and we walked into a new season financially stable where I obtained a job that worked perfectly with our family schedule!

One of my favorite passages of scripture to help remind me of God’s faithfulness is ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭13‬:‭8‬, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” It reminds me of all the things that God has previously done and that the same God who brought deliverance, healed, and made a way for me in the past is the same God today. He doesn’t change. Even though our situations change, and trials and problems occur, He doesn’t. And when we find ourselves faced with worry and fear, scripture tells us He is the same forever. So again, the same God who performed a miracle in your life 1, 2, or even 10 years ago is the same God who will be there in the future to help you get through. He is the one who puts all the pieces in the right place. Remind yourself of the Shunammite woman’s story and tell your situation, it’s not over!

Don’t stop believing in the promises of God, hold on to His word and remind yourself that even when things seem like there is no solution, aren’t changing, or even getting worst, remember, it’s not over
