The Move: Was She Right or Was She Wrong?

I don’t know about you, but I’m naturally more of a behind-the-scenes, “don’t tell anyone I can do this” type of person. But, as I grow and mature, I’m learning the beauty of God-given confidence. Although not always comfortable, when I walk confidently in Him, He ALWAYS gets the glory!
Esther’s story is an intriguing adventure of twists and turns. One that many may not understand. The story doesn’t start with her as the queen but reveals a glimpse of what happens before she comes on the scene.
The plot consists of a queen, a king, and a banquet (Esther 1:1-10). The previous queen of the Persian Empire, Queen Vashti, was demanded to come to the king’s banquet to show off her beauty, but she refused. Mind you, the king is known for showing off his glorious, wealthy kingdom, including his beautiful queen. His officials and staff, army officials, and leaders from all over attended this banquet. So this was a big deal! Fine white draperies, gold and silver couches resting on mosaic floors, and so forth. Wait, the food…can you imagine the FOOD?! So all of this, and the queen refused to attend. But why? Did she make the right move by taking a stand for her dignity? Or was she wrong for disobeying the king’s command?
It is not said why Queen Vashti refused, and one can argue the morality of her actions. But, as I read this story, it made me think about my own actions and why I do certain things. Actions are dictated by decisions, from the styles of clothing we wear to the color we paint our nails. Sometimes when we have to make big decisions, we freeze in fear. Fear of making the wrong decision, fear of hurting someone, fear of what will come after…But the thing about God is, He is the main character of our story, and He can take our actions and use them for good. Even. When We Don’t Understand.
We will not understand every detail of our lives just like we don’t understand every detail of Queen Vashti’s story. But when we look for God in every detail and decision, we will find the wisdom we need to act. And who knows, our decisions may lead to miracles. Not just for ourselves and our families. But those around us and those that will come after us. Look at Queen Vashti...God used her decision to refuse to attend the king's banquet to carefully select Esther, who would later help free her people from genocide. And that is a MIRACLE (an extraordinary manifestation of the work of God)!
So instead of asking was she right or was she wrong, maybe the better question is: was she used?
The next time you are faced with a decision, pause and know that God is with you! He always knows the best option and as we look to Him, we will have the opportunity to be used by Him and ways that we cannot imagine!
Great writing! I enjoyed reading this.
